Barcelona step up Matthijs de Ligt transfer pursuit as Ajax sensation admits ‘let's see where I end up’

After agreeing a deal for Frenkie de Jong in January, Barcelona have now switched their attentions to a summer move for his Ajax team-mate Matthijs de Ligt.

Sporting director Eric Abidal was in the stands at the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday to watch De Ligt in action in the Netherlands' 3-2 defeat to Germany.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu and CEO Oscar Grau also flew out to the Dutch capital for Monday's European Club Association (ECA) meeting.

Bartomeu and Grau had previously travelled to Amsterdam in January to tie up the signing of De Jong with Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar and sporting director Marc Overmars.

The Catalan club retain a good relationship with those two and especially the latter, who spent four seasons at Camp Nou as a player between 2000 and 2004.

Having sealed the signing of the talented midfielder, Barca are keen to bring in De Ligt as well and were expected to discuss a move on Monday, with reports estimating the defender could cost around €75 million.

De Jong (below) was signed for €75m plus €11m in variables, but De Ligt is two years younger (19) and is just as highly rated.

De Ligt did not have his best game in the Germany defeat, but did score for Ronald Koeman's side and admitted afterwards: "In the first half, we did not deserve more than four out of 10, myself and Virgil van Dijk."

Later, he was asked by Esporte Interativo if he was thinking about a possible move to Barca and said: "I play my game. I concentrate on football. Let's see where I end up. It's not something I worry about."

The centre-back is wanted by a number of other top European clubs, including Juventus, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, but it is understood his preferred choice is Barcelona.
