Barcelona star Gavi gives transfer answer to Chelsea and Todd Boehly amid major contract worry

Barcelona star Gavi has been linked with securing a transfer to Chelsea this summer with the Blues said to have entered negotiations for the 18-year-old earlier this month. The news arrived as a slight shock especially as Gavi remaining at Barcelona for much of his career looked likely given his progress into the first-team from the infamous La Masia academy.

However, a major contract problem for Barcelona arrived with Gavi's senior deal made null and void due to the Spanish outfit's ongoing financial problems. In the meantime, the teenager has reverted to a far less lucrative youth contract which sees him become a free agent at the end of the season.

In an attempt to take advantage of Barcelona's worrying situation regarding Gavi, Todd Boehly and co. held talks with his entourage. According to AS, the meeting between the Spain international's agent, Ivan de la Pena, and Chelsea representatives in Madrid a few weeks ago went 'very well'.

With full knowledge of the predicament Gavi finds himself in, Barca manager Xavi was quizzed over the future of the midfielder in his pre-Getafe press conference earlier this month. "I don't think Gavi would be happy at a different club," Xavi told reporters. "He has everything here at 18 and is an important player for the team. I think his future is here at the club."

Xavi made his stance very clear with his comments and now Gavi has delivered his answer to the uncertainty surrounding his future. According to Spanish outlet Sport, Gavi privately confirmed to Xavi that he has no intention of leaving the current La Liga leaders when his contract expires in June.

Their report added that Gavi is very satisfied with his role at Camp Nou and his only concern is that the situation gets fixed soon. A midfield acquisition in west London looks highly likely this summer with Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Manu Kone and Moises Caicedo some of the options on the Blues' wish list.

Whoever arrives as the club's new manager will likely have the final say on any transfer incomings. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is the clear favourite for the vacancy with Chelsea on the verge of appointing the Argentine as Graham Potter's permanent successor.
