Barcelona send ominous warning to Manchester United with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in attendance

Barcelona have sent an ominous warning to Manchester United ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday by beating Atletico Madrid with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in attendance.

United haven't got a game this weekend due to the FA Cup semi-final fixtures which has given them a full week of preparation ahead of the La Liga giants travelling to Old Trafford.

With no other commitments Solskjaer travelled to Catalonia with Mike Phelan and Kieran McKenna to watch Barca take on Atletico.

Barca needed to win to all but confirm the La Liga title, with them holding a healthy eight point lead over second place Atleti before kick-off.

It was a tasty and competitive game in the opening stages with both teams going close and then Diego Costa provided everyone with some vintage Diego Costa by getting sent off for what appeared to be dissent.

Going down to ten men meant Atletico sat back and hit the ball long and they frustrated Barcelona for long periods of the game, giving United some hope that they can be stopped for a little while at least.

It wasn't until the 85th minute that the deadlock was broken when Luis Suarez bent a brilliant shot into the far corner.

Less than a minute later Barca scored again and it was the player that must be giving United's fans and defenders nightmares - Lionel Messi.

The Argentine latched onto a through ball, put two defenders on the floor before slotting home.

It would have been a mixed scouting mission for Solskjaer and his team.

On one hand he saw that Barcelona can be stunted even against ten men, but on the other he saw just how deadly Barcelona's attack force can be and that they are able to grind out wins against incredibly tough defences.

The United boss will have plenty of food for thought.
