Barcelona have sacked head coach Quique Setien.
Since the La Liga runners-up were demolished 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals on Friday, it has been expected that the Spaniard would soon be shown the door at the Nou Camp.
And on Monday evening, the Spanish club made an official announcement to say that the 61-year-old’s time as first-team head coach was up.
“The Board of Directors have agreed that Quique Setien is no longer the first team coach,” read a statement.
“This is the first decision within a wider restructuring of the first team which will be agreed between the current technical secretary and the new coach, who will be announced in the coming days.
“Quique Setien came to Barca as coach on 13 January of this year.
“During his seven months in charge the Cantabiran coached the first team in 25 matches: 19 in the league, three in the Champions League and three in the Copa del Rey.
“The breakdown of his results was 16 wins, four draws and five defeats.”
Setien took over from Ernesto Valverde and signed a contract with Barca that was set to last until 2022.
Former Barcelona player and current Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman had been linked with the now vacant job even before an announcement was made about Setien’s future.
Former Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino is also among the names to have been mentioned as a potential replacement for Setien, though Pochettino previously said he would never manage the La Liga side, having played for their rivals Espanyol.
