Barcelona's major problem in trying to sign 'transfer target Andy Robertson'

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Barcelona, according to reports from Spain.

The Catalan giants got a good look at the left-back in action in the Champions League recently, when the Reds knocked Barcelona out at the semi-final stage.

The fiery Scot clashed with both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on the night, and proved himself more than able to mix it up with the world's best before picking up an injury.

The knock resulted in the left-back having to come off at half time at Anfield, but it seems he had already done enough to impress the Barcelona top brass, who are looking to rebuild the Nou Camp club ahead of the new season.

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona see Robertson as a player more than capable of bolstering their ranks.

This is not the first team Barcelona have been linked with a Liverpool player, having previously completed some pretty high-profile signings from the Reds.

Javier Mascherano left Liverpool for Barcelona back in 2010 before Luis Suarez said goodbye to Anfield for a new life in Catalonia.

Philippe Coutinho was the most recent transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona, joining the Spanish giants in a deal worth a staggering £142million.

Transfer history suggests Barcelona have the pulling power to attract Liverpool players, but one big problem could see the Spaniards miss out on Robertson this time round.

When Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barcelona they insisted a clause was put in place to - at the very least - deter the Catalan giants from signing anymore of their players.

The clause requires Liverpool to pay a premium of £100million on top of any transfer fee agreed for a Reds player.

This would mean that should Liverpool shake hands on a deal worth around £60million for Robertson - this figure would immediately get bumped up to £160m.

Barcelona likely have this sort of money to part with, but it is very unlikely they'll want to use it all on one left-back - especially as they have other areas to strengthen and Jordi Alba already at the club.
