Arda Turan sentenced to prison for firing gun at hospital after nightclub fight with singer

Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan has been sentenced to two years and eight months in jail after firing a gun at a hospital following a fight with a Turkish pop star.

However, the 31-year-old - who is currently on loan at Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir - has seen the verdict deferred by the court, meaning he will only be sent to prison if he commits a crime in the next five years.

Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 12 and a half years for sexual harassment, inflicting intentional injuries, shooting a firearm in a way to cause panic and carrying weapons without a license. He was found guilty on all charges apart from sexual harassment.

Turan and singer Berkay Sahin were involved in an altercation in an Istanbul nightclub last year which left the singer requiring surgery on a broken nose.

The former Atletico Madrid midfielder followed the singer to hospital, where he reportedly begged for forgiveness and asked to be shot over alleged comments made to Berkay's wife, Ozlem Ada Sahin, before the gun went off.

Basaksehir fined Turan, who has continued to play for the club, ₺2.5 million (£4350,629) over the incident.

Turan joined Barcelona from Atletico Madrid in 2015 in a deal worth €34m, going on to making 55 appearances and scoring 15 goal and winning La Liga twice.

The Turkey international returned to his homeland on a two-and-a-half-year loan - the remainder of his Barcelona contract - in early 2018.
