Barcelona's advantage over Liverpool ahead of Champions League semi-final

Barcelona look set to have the luxury of being able to rest players between the two legs of their Champions League semi-final with Liverpool.

Ernesto Valverde's side are likely to have the La Liga title wrapped up prior to next Wednesday's first leg with the Reds at the Nou Camp.

If Atletico Madrid lose to Valencia on Wednesday night then Barcelona will be crowned champions.

What really happened when Liverpool U23s 'embarrassed' Steven Gerrard's Rangers

Even if Diego Simeone's men pick up maximum points and win again at home to Valladolid on Saturday afternoon, Barca will clinch the title if they beat lowly Levante on Saturday night.

“It is very important that we get the three points that we need this weekend, but we must stay focused,” Valverde said following Tuesday's 2-0 win over Alaves.

“Tonight's win has left us on the verge of the title which brings immense joy after so many months of chasing it.

“It happens when it happens. I am just happy to be in a position to be a champion again. Atletico will battle until the end and I will welcome the title when or if it comes.”

Liverpool and Barcelona meet in the second leg at Anfield on Tuesday, May 7.

Liverpool chief salutes 'incredible' recruitment drive behind push for double glory

Both clubs are in domestic action on Saturday, May 4 with Liverpool travelling to Newcastle United and Barca away at Celta Vigo.

But while Valverde is set to be in a position where he can rest the likes of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi before the trip to Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp will have to go flat out for victory in the North East as Liverpool battle with Manchester City for the Premier League crown.
