Barcelona's £177m problem that could help Chelsea seal Lautaro Martinez transfer

Barcelona have been handed a warning by La Liga president Javier Tebas that will be of interest to Chelsea and Frank Lampard.

Both clubs are said to be weighing up moves for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez when the summer transfer window opens.

football.london revealed last month that Blues head coach Lampard will be looking to bolster his goalscoring options ahead of the 2020/21 season.

"A forward on the agenda. Like in January, Frank Lampard will certainly have a new forward on the agenda, either a striker or a goalscoring winger," our Chelsea correspondent Oliver Harbord said in a Q&A session. "If the Blues got Jovic, it would likely be on a loan move.

"Whereas Moussa Dembele is also on the list.

"Martinez would be a massive deal, however, with the striker having impressed with Inter Milan and they wouldn't let him go for cheap."

According to reports, Inter will refuse to accept anything less than his €111 million release clause (£98.3m) which can only be triggered by clubs outside of Italy during the first fortnight of every July.

Barcelona are reportedly favourites to sign the Argentina international, but a summer move has been placed into doubt which could see Chelsea benefit.

This is because Tebas has enforced financial regulations in Spain which restricts Barcelona from spending beyond their means as they've been issued a financial warning created by the coronavirus pandemic.

"We have seen the cash flows for each club and right now they have squads which exceed the [financial] limits we will establish for next season," Tebas told the Instituto Iberoamericano de Derecho Deportivo.

"That brings consequences. Clubs are going to have to look at their academies and come up with a strategy to reduce salaries. There's no other solution.

"Transfers that exceed financial limits will not be allowed -- impossible."

Financial limits were first introduced in La Liga seven years ago, with the idea being that clubs manage their finances appropriately.

As reported by ESPN, Barca's limit for the 2019-20 season was set at €671 million (£594m) and it is claimed they will have to knock at least €200m (£177m) off their budget next season as a direct result of COVID-19.

So unless the Catalan giants can structure a deal for Martinez without exceeding their financial limit, the chances of the striker moving to the Camp Nou are impossible and that keeps Chelsea in the hunt for his signature.
