Barcelona's reported £170m problem that could be fantastic news for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta

Arsenal will be watching on with interest amid new claims regarding Barcelona's financial situation.

Reports from Spain suggest that the La Liga giants need to slash their wage bill by around £170million in order to avoid the risk of going bankrupt.

According to EsportsRAC, talks are taking place between the club and the legal representatives of their players regarding their salaries.

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will go to Old Trafford to try and get three points

Barca's budget for this season apparently needs to be sorted by Thursday.

They are forecasting a drop in revenue of more than £230m, so they are calling on players to make financial sacrifices.

Following the reduction in income, wages are now reported to be more that 80% of that figure.

Assuming an agreement is reached, players are likely to be paid the same in total but over a longer period of time, the Daily Mail reports.

Something similar has already happened with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique, who have all agreed to contract extensions.

But could Barcelona also be forced to offload some players - either in January or next summer?

Arsenal have previously been linked with former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho's future was uncertain following a loan spell at Bayern Munich and he was tipped to return to the Premier League at one point.

The Gunners were credited with an interest in the Brazil international, along with Tottenham and Leicester City.

The 28-year-old ended up staying at the Nou Camp, though, and has made a good start under new boss Ronald Koeman, scoring two goals and providing two assists in six outings to date.

However, Coutinho suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's defeat to Real Madrid.

He completed the match but is now facing a spell on the sidelines.

While Barcelona have not revealed a timescale on his absence, the Brazil national team's medical staff have already ruled him out of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in November.

Barca stars took a temporary pay cut in March when the coronavirus pandemic first struck. The fallout from the crisis continues, though.

This latest news comes after president Josep Bartomeu stepped down from the role earlier this week.
