Barcelona rest five key players ahead of Manchester United Champions League tie

Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets have been handed the weekend off by Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde in preparation for Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester United.

The pair were joined by Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitic in missing Barcelona's La Liga trip to basement club Huesca on Saturday.

Rakitic is suffering from illness but is not believed to be a doubt for the visit of United to the Camp Nou.

Messi was temporarily sidelined at Old Trafford on Wednesday night after a collision with Chris Smalling left the Argentine forward with a bloodied nose and a swollen eye.

Messi's influence on the game waned thereafter, with United improving after Luis Suarez's 13th-minute header ricocheted in off Luke Shaw.

Valverde said on Friday that Messi was still feeling the effects of his challenge with Smalling on his return to Barcelona.

"I spoke to him and he is fine, but it was a hard knock,” he said. "He wasn’t feeling good the day after nor during the rest of the match. It was like a truck had run over him."

United are far from out of the tie and Paul Pogba referenced United's comeback victory against Paris Saint-Germain as reason to believe the Reds can reach the semi-final stages of the competition for the first time since 2011.

"We know where we can hurt them," the 26-year-old said.

"Probably Paris will be in their minds for sure because they saw what we can do against PSG.

"Obviously they will be comfortable on their own pitch but let us see. We'll see what happens at the end.

"Of course, we believe that we can beat them."
