Barcelona president opens door to Philippe Coutinho departure - but only on one condition

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has opened the door to Philippe Coutinho leaving the Nou Camp this summer - but only on one condition.

The former Liverpool playmaker has struggled in Spain since his £142million club-record move in January 2018 with his loss of form such a concern that team-mates have been forced to come out and defend him after the 26-year-old was  booed by his own supporters .

Dismayed by how his dream move has turned into a nightmare, the playmaker reportedly told team-mates on international duty last month that  he wants to leave the Catalan giants  this summer, and he is set to meet with Barca bosses this month.

Finding himself in and out of Ernesto Valverde's plans, Coutinho has registered only five goals and two assists after being limited to 19 La Liga starts so far this season, with the Brazilian being linked with a move to the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain as a result.

Barcelona take on Manchester United in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, and Bartomeu insisted the Catalans are pleased with the Brazilian when speaking to Spanish television station TVE ahead of the game.

However, he refused to close the door entirely on a potential departure after revealing what it would take for Barcelona to cash in on Coutinho this summer.

"Coutinho is an excellent player and he has the coach's confidence," he said.

"He has a contract with us and he will remain at the team, unless they (another club) meet his release clause.

"It's not possible for Neymar to come to Barcelona as we have another sporting project with Dembele and Coutinho.

"We are happy with what we have."
