Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman responds to Lionel Messi comments amid Man City transfer talk

Ronald Koeman has responded to continued speculation surrounding the future of Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

Messi has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp, with Manchester City touted as a possible destination for the six-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with an interest in the Argentina forward.

In a new interview, Messi admitted he did not know if he would stay at Barcelona - the club he has played for his entire senior career to date.

Man City: 2020 in review

The 33-year-old revealed he was in touch with City boss Pep Guardiola but had not discussed a possible reunion with the Spaniard at the Etihad Stadium.

Messi - in the final year of his current contract - also expressed an interest in playing in the MLS in the United States before he hangs up his boots.

While much has been made of his relationship with Guardiola, fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino looks set to be appointed as the new PSG boss.

"I do not know if it is true about Pochettino to PSG," said Barca head coach Koeman. "If Messi decides his future, it will not depend on a coach.

"I did not see the interview live, but I have seen it.

"I have always been calm with Messi and I will not be calmer because he said that he will decide at the end of the season.

"We’ll see what can happen. I appreciate Messi’s words because he is a very important player for the club and for football.”

Messi told La Sexta: "I’m not negotiating as a free agent with any club.

"As I said, I have nothing clear until the end of the season. Let's see how we do this season and what happens.

"I’m not gonna join Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid. It’s absolutely impossible.

"I don’t know if I’ll leave Barca, I’ll talk about it at the end of the season.

"I hope to be part of Barcelona as a club also when I’ll retire."

On Guardiola, Messi added: "I don't know how long my last chat with Pep Guardiola was, but we do talk.

"We don't talk about whether we are going to meet again.

"For me Pep is the best, he has something special."

And on the prospect of a move to America, Messi said: "I've always had the dream of playing in another league, in the United States.

"Maybe it will happen, doesn't have to be right away. Today I am just focused on these next six months."
