Ronald Koeman says Barcelona need to help Sergio Aguero find a level higher than in his final season at Manchester City if they are to reap the rewards of the new signing.
The La Liga giants swooped to sign the City striker on a free transfer this summer after Pep Guardiola took the decision not to give the club record scorer a new deal following a year of struggling for form and fitness. Aguero came off the bench to score two goals in his final Premier League game in a fitting farewell, but was not in contention to start the Champions League final against Chelsea after so long away from the first team squad.
Barcelona were convinced enough to sign the 33-year-old up, although Koeman - who golfed with Guardiola recently as the two friends enjoyed some downtime - admits that work is needed to bring Aguero up to his best level.
"The other front player is Kun Aguero, from City. He's really experienced, really good quality in the box," he told club media.
"He's a finishing player, scoring goals and let's hope that we can put him on a good physical level. I think he lost a little bit last season. He had some injuries and was not physically top where you need to be to play but we give him that possibility to come to that level and makes the difference up front with [Lionel] Messi, [Memphis] Depay, Ansu Fati, [Antoine] Griezmann, [Martin] Braithwaite. We have good competition in those kind of positions."
