Barcelona make decision over 2020 transfer policy as they focus on just one position

Barcelona will reportedly prioritise signing a new right back next year as they believe every other area of their team is good enough to compete for major honours.

The Catalan club splashed out over £200m in the summer on the acquisitions of the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong and Neto, and they are not expected to spend a significant amount of money during the next transfer window in January.

According to Marca the right back position is the only one they feel could be improved in Ernesto Valverde's team, with the manager wanting Sergi Roberto to play further forward in midfield.

Nelson Semedo is another option to play in the position, although he has tended to play left back so far this season, while Junior Firpo's natural position is also left back.

21-year-old Moussa Wague was promoted to the first-team over the summer and has made three La Liga appearances so far during the current campaign but is being eased into the side, and is not thought to be ready to make the position his own just yet.

It is not yet clear who Barcelona will be targeting to sign at right back but the likes of Arsenal's Hector Bellerin have been suggested in the past, and they will no doubt be drawing up a list of potential players as the season progresses.

The news appears to be bad news for PSG star Neymar, who was linked all summer with a return to his ex-club. With Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele among their ranks, as well as wonderkid Ansu Fati developing, Barcelona have appeared to decide, however, that they do not need the Brazilian.

The La Liga champions have had a mixed start to the season. Valverde found himself under pressure when his team won just two of their first six games in all competitions, but they have now won their last four, and sit just two points behind current league leaders Real Madrid in second place.
