Barcelona legend Xavi plays down comparisons with Man City's Pep Guardiola

Barcelona legend Xavi has dismissed suggestions that his managerial career could reach the heights of Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

The Spanish midfielder was appointed as Qatari club Al Sadd's head coach in July after retiring from professional football earlier in the year.

Having spent the last four seasons with the club as a player, Xavi became the new man in the dugout over the summer and has enjoyed a very successful start to his coaching career.

He has overseen two competitive matches so far, starting off with an AFC Champions League round of 16 tie against Al Duhail, which ended with his side qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Al Sadd drew the first leg of that fixture 1-1, before coming out on top in the return leg 3-1.

After such a positive start, the press threw a suggestion that the Spanish World Cup winner could become the 'next' Guardiola .

However, speaking after the match Xavi batted away those suggestions, lavishing his former Barcelona boss with praise.

He said:"It's the beginning. Thank you so much but no, no, it's not the moment to say that we can reach the level of Guardiola, it's just the beginning of my career.

"I am very happy today, of course, but Guardiola is another level, he is another level."

The pair worked together at Barcelona between for four trophy-laden seasons between 2008 and 2012.

Guardiola went on to win three Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokal cups with Bayern Munich before joining Manchester City three years ago.

Since, the City boss has added two Premier League trophies, two League Cups and the FA Cup to take his total tally to 27 trophies in just 626 matches.

Similarly, Guardiola has only finished outside of the top two once in the league, which came in his first season at the Etihad in the 2016/17 season.
