Barcelona issue Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele injury updates

Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele will both be fit to face Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, according to Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde.

Messi suffered a bloodied nose and swollen eye after an innocuous challenge with United centre-back Chris Smalling in the first leg, with the Argentine's contribution limited after the first-half collision.

Dembele made his first appearance since Barcelona's last-16 second leg victory over Lyon in Saturday's goalless draw at Huesca, and the France international will be available to play some part at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.

"He’s fine after the knock at Old Trafford, he’s in perfect shape for the game tomorrow," Valverde said of Messi, who provided the assist for Luis Suarez's 13th-minute header that deflected in off Luke Shaw during Barcelona's 1-0 first leg victory last Wednesday.

On Dembele, Valverde added: "He’s gone four weeks without playing but he’s available for tomorrow. We’re not sure for how long though."

United became the first team in the history of the European Cup to reverse a two-goal deficit away from home by beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 at the Parc des Princes in the last-16, and Valverde is wary of the danger posed by United's attacking outlets.

"All you can do is concentrate on what you think is good for you to do," he explained. We’ll do that.

"We’re aware of United’s threats and we won’t let it become an end-to-end game. We’ll look to close the spaces to limit their options."
