Barcelona in talks with Ronald Koeman over new contract despite third place finish last season

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is set to receive a contract extension at the club despite the Catalan side failing to compete with both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid last season.

Diego Simeone's side won La Liga by two points over their Madrid rivals, but Barcelona were off the pace, finishing five points adrift of second during a difficult year.

Koeman's current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, but could be renewed as Barcelona look to rebuild following their financial crisis.

Barcelona did win the Copa Del Rey last season, and club president Joao Laporta will reportedly keep his faith in Koeman moving forward.

Laporta is wary of leaving his Koeman short of power and authority in the dressing room which is common when a deal is set to expire, and in an interview with Onze TV, the club president explained that talks are underway with the board and Koeman's agent Rob Jansen about an extension.

The president said: "Koeman has all my support, my respect and all the confidence so that he can work as comfortably as possible.

"We have already spoken a couple of times with Rob Jansen, his agent, so we are talking.

"I told the coach that he has to be strong, he cannot be in the weak position of ending the contract, so I raised the possibility of extending the contract."

Although Champions League glory may not be an expectation due to the current state of the club, La Liga success will be an expectation at Barcelona as usual, as well as a solid defence of their Copa Del Rey title from last season.

It will be the first season in 17 years that Barcelona will tackle La Liga without Lionel Messi, and it is yet to be seen how they will cope in the long run without the iconic no.10.

Antoine Griezmann also departed the Camp Nou before Deadline Day, as the French international joined former side Atletico on loan with an obligation to buy, and joins Luis Suarez who was also shipped off by the Catalan side previously.

Barcelona have started brightly in La Liga so far, taking seven points from a possible nine and matching both of their Madrid rivals in the process.

The goals from Messi may be missing from the team, but Memphis Depay has already got off to a good start, scoring in Barcelona's previous two league matches.

Koeman's first real test will come on September 14, as Barcelona host Bayern Munich in the first Champions League group game of the season.

Barcelona were drawn in Group E, with Bayern, Benfica and Dynamo Kyiv, and although the Champions League isn't too much of a pressure point for Koeman, they will still be expected to progress from the group.
