Barcelona fans highlight Philippe Coutinho's big Liverpool mistake during Champions League match

The jeers and whistles were as jarring as they were loud, raining down from the steep Camp Nou stands like a torrent.

An hour into a thrilling Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde had seen enough.

Up went the number seven on the fourth official's electronic board. Philippe Coutinho's time was up.

The reaction from the home supporters spoke volumes of what they thought of the Brazilian's fitful performance against his former side.

And such has been the way for Coutinho ever since his contentious move from Liverpool to Barcelona for an eye-watering £142million in January 2018.

Much water has passed under the bridge since, although some Liverpool supporters cannot forgive the midfielder for agitating for a move and throwing his toys out of the pram when it didn't initially transpire.

In terms of silverware, Coutinho's move has been entirely justified, with two La Liga titles, a goal in a Copa del Rey final win last season, another such showpiece to come later this month and, most likely, a Champions League final appearance.

Not bad for less than 18 months' work after winning nothing during his five years at Anfield.

But he hasn't been loved at Barcelona as he was at Liverpool, the supporters unforgiving in their assessment of a player who cost their club record transfer fee.

Nor has Valverde managed to extract the performances from Coutinho that Jurgen Klopp managed at Liverpool, although with Lionel Messi centre stage the Brazilian has had to cope with going from starring role to supporting cast.

His struggles were evident in his performance on Wednesday night, Coutinho tentative, timid and seemingly reluctant to upset his former team-mates while Luis Suarez, a completely different character, clearly didn't give a flying one about tormenting old employers.

While Klopp admitted earlier in the week he missed Coutinho as both a player and a person, he had no idea Liverpool would become as good as they have in his absence.

The Reds have moved on, their results underlining the fact.

Coutinho's mistake wasn't joining Barcelona. Instead, it was in not sticking around long enough at Liverpool to discover what was around the corner.

Of course, that huge transfer fee gave the Reds the funds to sign Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk and address the team's two main shortcomings.

For that, Coutinho's legacy lives on, Liverpool clearly gaining the better of the deal.

But the Brazilian remains the great lost opportunity of the Klopp era, the one lingering what might have been.
