Barcelona face injury crisis as Ousmane Dembele is ruled out for five weeks

Barcelona are facing a potential selection crisis as Ousmane Dembele became the latest player to be struck down with injury.

The 22-year-old picked up a hamstring strain in Barca's La Liga opener against Atletic Bilbao on Friday.

A statement on the Barcelona website said: "A medical examination on Ousmane Dembele has diagnosed a strain of his left hamstring and the Frenchman is set to be out for approximately five weeks as a result."

Luis Suarez was forced off in the same fixture with a calf issue - a similar injury that is keeping talisman Lionel Messi on the sidelines.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde is now staring at the prospect of having all three players out injured as they look to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Bilbao.

Summer signing Antoine Griezmann deputised for Suarez in central attack on Friday, while Rafinha came on for the former Liverpool mans place.

Barca's next fixture sees them host Real Betis on Sunday in their second domestic encounter of the campaign.

Messi is unlikely to be fit for the clash as he continues to recover from his calf strain that kept him out of the club's pre-season tour of the US, while the fitness of Suarez is unknown.

To add insult to injury for Valverde, Barcelona have just let Philippe Coutinho join Bayern Munich on loan for the season, and are as yet no closer to completing a move for Neymar.

Bayern's agreement with Barca for Coutinho includes an option to buy clause next summer for a fee of £120 million.

Speaking after his move to the German champions, Coutinho said: "For me, this move means a new challenge in a new country with one of the best clubs in Europe. I'm very much looking forward to that.

"I have big ambitions and I'm convinced that I can achieve them together with my new team-mates."
