Barcelona ditched its signature stripes for checkerboard jerseys and fans were furious

Every year, soccer clubs go through a uniform change. But when it comes to the storied clubs with signature looks, the home jerseys generally get tweaked rather than overhauled.

Barcelona’s home kits, which have featured vertical blaugrana stripes in almost every season since 1920, will abandon that signature look for 2019-20.

The club and Nike released their latest uniforms, going with a checkerboard pattern for the first time in the team’s history. According to a team release, the checkerboard pattern took “inspiration from the city of Barcelona by incorporating the characteristic blocks of its Eixample district.”

Still, Barcelona is known for its stripes. It’s the club’s signature look. The checkerboard pattern was awfully reminiscent of Croatia’s kits, and Barcelona fans were not particularly happy about the change.

Generally, people hate change when it comes to uniforms, but the angry fans have a point here. Barcelona should always have striped kits — it’s part of the team’s history.
