Barcelona destroyed by Bayern Munich as Lionel Messi and Co suffer Champions League humiliation

Barcelona were thrashed 8-2 by Bayern Munich as they suffered their heaviest ever European defeat.

The Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon was between two heavyweights of the game, but there was no contest on the night.

It took Bayern Munich just four minutes to open the scoring at Thomas Muller turned the ball home after a nice team move.

In a frantic opening seven minutes Barça pulled level, though the goal had an element of comedy about it.

Jordi Alba crossed it in from the left and David Alaba made a real mess of his attempted clearance, looping it over Manuel Neuer for a ridiculous own goal.

From then on though there was only one team in it and Bayern killed the tie off in the space of nine minutes.

First Ivan Perisic but them back in front, before a super Leon Goretzka through ball put Serge Gnabry through to make it three.

Muller's second of the evening ensured it would be a rout, but there was far worse to come for the Liga giants in the second half.

Quique Setien took off Sergi Roberto for Antoine Griezmann in an attacking half-time change, and they reduced the arrears just before the hour mark.

Lionel Messi 's long diagonal found Alba on the right, and his low ball across was gathered in by Suarez. The Uruguayan showed some of his old magic and he squeezed past a defender to score, but that only seemed to wake the Bavarians up.

Alphonso Davies embarrassed Nelson Semedo on the left to tee-up Joshua Kimmich for five and at that point the flood gates opened.

Robert Lewandowski nodded home unmarked at the back post, and just three minutes later substitute Philippe Coutinho got in on the act.

The Brazilian got his second and his team's eighth on 89 minutes, and the fact referee Massimiliano Irrati added just two minutes was an act of mercy.
