Barcelona officials flew to Amsterdam on Wednesday to tie up a summer transfer for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Previous reports in the Catalan media had claimed the player had chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this season, but the 21-year-old’s preference was always a move to Camp Nou.
A Barca delegation, including president Josep Maria Bartomeu, travelled to the Dutch capital on Wednesday to finalise a summer switch and the deal could even be announced by the Catalan club this window.
Barca will pay around €90 million for the midfielder, who can play in a number of different positions across the centre of the park and also as a defender.
Bartomeu decided to take the matter in his hands and fly out to Amsterdam in a bid to tie up the deal amid interest from PSG, Manchester City and Juventus in the young Dutch international.
De Jong, who is set to sign a five-year contract with Barca, is considered to be ideally suited to the club’s playing style and is seen by the Blaugrana as a man who can feature in midfield for the next decade at Camp Nou.
