Barcelona could seek to repeat Chelsea transfer window strategy after Xavi appointment

Barcelona have drawn inspiration from Chelsea's appointment of Frank Lampard by filling Ronald Koeman's shoes with club legend Xavi.

The Catalan side welcome their club legend back to Camp Now having reached an agreement Al Sadd that sees the Qatari side receive €5 million (£4.3m) from the Spaniard's release clause.

Xavi had two years remaining on his contract with Al Sadd but bought into Barcelona's project during negotiations with club president Joan Laporta his potential appointment.

The Spaniard's return to Camp Nou makes him Johan Cruyff's next disciple, penning another chapter in Barcelona's new testament but Xavi's could spell bad news for Chelsea and their transfer market endeavours.

Barcelona's new manager poses a threat to Marina Granovskaia's plans on and off the pitch following a handful of striking similarities with Lampard's appointment in 2019.

The Blues' relative success in the dugout at Chelsea has handed the Catalan side the blueprints to plotting their return to European dominance, after clever management in a transfer window saw the west Londoners manage the prospect of their rivals unlocking their war chests.

Xavi hasn't been handed the task of battling with a transfer ban like Lampard was but Barcelona's challenging financial situation poses a similar challenge.

The core pillars of Chelsea's success under their all-time top goalscorer stemmed from the ability to turn the use of academy graduates into a strength rather than a weakness, which is exactly what Barcelona will be looking to emulate.

A primary factor in this process was the raw effect that Lampard had on the likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James in pushing themselves beyond expectation due to their boss' legendary status for a club they grew up supporting.

This would likely happen as well at Camp Nou now that Xavi is appointed; the potential of Barcelona's world-famed La Masia academy would be used to its utmost potential for the first time since Pep Guardiola's era and suddenly some of the most exciting youngsters in the world will feel start to feel invested in again.

A prime example of an exciting talent who felt the need to seek an alternative route into first-team football out of La Masia was Chelsea's Xavier Mbuyamba.

The then 18-year-old centre-half joined the Blues from Barcelona in September 2020 after the two clubs agreed on a deal that saw the Dutch youth international move to Stamford Bridge for free.

Several reports have claimed that the west Londoners beat Juventus to the then-18-year-old's signature, while Barcelona academy director and countryman Patrick Kluivert also tried extending his stay at Camp Nou.

Xavi's appointment could now hinder Chelsea's transfer plans that once saw prospects like Mbuyamba join the Blues.

Exciting talent like Gavi, Nico Gonzalez and other La Masia stars have already made significant inroads at Barcelona - similar to how Mount, Abraham, Tomori and James did amid the west Londoners' transfer ban.

Chelsea's clever appointment of Lampard published the script to performing around transfer window restrictions but, in doing so, shot themselves in the foot and now a large pool of football's next big talents are now potentially out of reach.

Lampard's frameworks could lay the foundations for Barcelona's rebuild, stabilising themselves to the point where one day the Catalan side can compete financially for and with the big names again.

Marina Granoskaia may then be forced to alter Chelsea's approach and engineer a new-look transfer plan.
