Barcelona confirm Pedri injury blow ahead of Europa League crunch match vs Manchester United

Barcelona midfielder Pedri will almost certainly miss his side's Europa League second-leg clash at Manchester United after confirmation of a hamstring injury.

The Blaugrana confirmed on Friday morning that their silky midfielder had suffered a muscular injury to his right leg, after he went down inside 40 minutes on Thursday evening and was replaced by Sergi Roberto. The 20-year-old watched from the bench as four second-half goals flew in, Marcus Rashford and an own-goal by Jules Kounde cancelled out by Marcos Alonso and Raphinha.

A statement from the Spanish club read: "The tests carried out this Friday morning have confirmed that Pedri has an injury to the rectus femoris of the right thigh. He is low and his evolution will mark his availability.

"The canary suffered the injury during the end of the first half of Barça-United played this Thursday at the Spotify Camp Nou. Unfortunately, the injury comes at one of the best moments of form for Pedri, who was a decisive man in the last victories for FC Barcelona."

Spanish outlet AS have since reported that Pedri will be sidelined for around one month, making next Thursday's trip to Old Trafford near-impossible. The news comes as a huge blow for the Catalan club, who could now be without three key midfielders for the second-leg.

Teenage sensation Gavi is a certainty to be absent in M16, having picked up his third European booking at Camp Nou. He will now serve a one-match suspension while experienced midfielder Sergio Busquets faces a race against time to be fit, having missed the opener due to injury.

United, meanwhile, will enjoy a minor influx of previously unavailable players, with Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer both returning from their own respective bans. Erik ten Hag will also have a fully rested Casemiro again, with the 30-year-old serving the last of his three-game suspension against Leicester City this weekend.
