Barcelona confirm Memphis Depay transfer as Nou Camp shake-up continues

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Dutch forward Memphis Depay on a free transfer.

The former Manchester United man has spent the last five seasons at Lyon, where he managed 76 goals in 133 games.

But after running down his contract with the Ligue 1 side he has now been snapped up by Barca, who are already having a busy summer.

On Saturday afternoon the club's official Twitter account initially posted the emoji of a lion, hinting at the deal being imminent due to the fact Depay has a huge tattoo of the animal on his back.

And just minutes later they posted a video of the player mocked up with a Barca shirt on, along with the words "Welcome Memphis".

He has signed a two-year contract which expires in the summer of 2023.

The 27-year-old joins fellow free agents Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero in making the move to the Nou Camp, with Barca acting early to strengthen their squad without spending a penny.

Depay will be desperate to make an impression in Spain after he struggled following his last big move when he joined United from PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

He played at Old Trafford for just two seasons, and failed to make much of an impression before going to Lyon.

Speaking about why this was the case recently, Depay's former teammate Rio Ferdinand recently told the BBC: "I think he’s a maverick. He’s a new-age type of personality who embraces everything of the lifestyle of a football player and beyond, and some people who are old school don’t like that and it’s taken time for someone even like me to adapt to that."

Depay is currently on international duty with the Netherlands at Euro 2020, and he scored in their 2-0 win against Austria on Thursday.

He will now link up with his ex-manager Ronald Koeman, who is clearly delighted with the signing.

Speaking on Thursday, when the move was looking close to completion, Koeman said: "Memphis has said something about his future which I can confirm.

"As far as I know, the move is well on its way. Although he hasn't signed yet, it is close. I wanted to complete the deal in January and if he comes it is great for us."

Barcelona will be looking to improve on their hugely disappointing 2020-21 campaign when they kick off the new season after the Euros.

Due to their current perilous financial situation they have particularly targeted free agents, but seem to be doing some smart business as they aim to get back to winning titles in the near future.
