Barcelona chief addresses Arturo Vidal transfer rumours with Man Utd interested

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde appeared to send out mixed messages when asked about the future of reported Manchester United target Arturo Vidal.

Chilean midfielder Vidal has been linked with a move away from Barcelona in the January transfer window, with United and Inter Milan believed to be among the clubs interested.

Vidal has started just four La Liga games for Barcelona this season - although he has come off the bench 11 times in the league and scored six goals.

The 32-year-old's agent has reportedly travelled from Chile to Europe for talks with interested clubs.

Valverde was asked about Vidal as he prepared his Barcelona side for Thursday's Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

And while the Barca boss started off by saying he didn't think Vidal would be leaving, he then appeared to confuse the issue by saying: "We will see what happens."

"I speak with him as I speak with others,’ said Valverde on Wednesday.

"He is a player who is with us and we do not have to think that he is going to leave.

"Then we will see what happens. Tomorrow we will see if he starts out.

"Arturo Vidal plays with us and tomorrow he will be on the field, on the bench or nearby.

"In the same way that we do not serve players from other teams, we do not pay attention to our interest."

United have problems in central midfield, with would-be first-choice pairing Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay both sidelined due to injury.

Vidal is contracted to Barcelona until the end of next season, and it is thought he would cost around £17million.

As well as Vidal, United have also been linked with a move for Tottenham's Christian Eriksen and Sean Longstaff of Newcastle .

Vidal is certainly a player who would bring a winning mentality to the club. He has been successful at every club he has played for, and has won a total of 15 trophies during spells at Juventus , Bayern Munich and Barcelona .
