Barcelona can hand Chelsea £13m transfer windfall as Todd Boehly agrees Malo Gusto signing

Chelsea could be set to receive a significant transfer windfall with Barcelona prepared to reignite their interest in Cesar Azpilicueta. The Catalan club were keen on signing the Blues' captain in the summer but Azpilicueta rejected their approach in favour of signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona hijacked Chelsea's moves for Raphinha and Jules Kounde in the summer, forcing Todd Boehly into signing alternative targets. Marcos Alonso left the club to join Xavi Hernandez's side, but the Spaniard was not joined by Azpilicueta.

The Chelsea icon wouldn’t usually be considered a first-choice defender for Graham Potter, but regular injuries to Reece James has seen the Spaniard play more minutes than first expected this season. understands the Blues have agreed a £26.3million fee plus add-ons to sign Malo Gusto from Lyon, with the 19-year-old set to join the club in the summer.

Chelsea had originally wanted Gusto to move to the club in January, but Lyon would not change their stance and will now keep hold of the talented defender until the end of the season. The Frenchman is currently in London undergoing a medical test ahead of his proposed move to the Blues before being loaned back to the Ligue 1 side.

Gusto's arrival will see him become James' deputy at right wing-back next season, a move that could now spell the end of Azpilicueta's glittering career in west London. Spanish outlet SPORT has claimed that Barcelona could reignite their interest in Azpilicueta in the summer transfer window.

Despite signing an extension keeping him at Chelsea until 2024, a move back to his home country could be of interest if he’s guaranteed more regular minutes. The 33-year-old is valued at €15million (£13.1million) by CIES Football Observatory, but with just a year left on his contract in the summer, the Blues may struggle to get in excess of £10million.
