Barcelona boss Xavi set to hand bumper new contract to 'future of the team' Gavi

Barcelona wonderkid Gavi is reportedly set to be handed a bumper new contract and hefty renewal bonus by new boss Xavi.

The 17-year-old is still only on a youth team salary and is said to earn just £1,600-a-week, which equates to roughly £85,000 per year.

But that all looks set to change with a hefty new deal which will see him handed a signing on fee in the region of £1.7million.

According to 'Què t'hi jugues' on Cadena SER, Gavi’s new contract will run until 2026, and will see his release clause drastically increase from his current one of £43m.

Gavi was handed his first-team debut by former boss Ronald Koeman, but his development has come on leaps and bounds under Xavi.

The highly-rated youngster has made 21 appearances for the Catalan giants in all competitions this season and has regularly partnered the likes of Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong in central midfield.

El Nacional say Chelsea were considering a move to sign Gavi last month, but that looks increasingly unlikely now.

Gavi’s first and only goal of the season so far came on Saturday as Barcelona unconvincingly beat struggling Elche in LaLiga.

Twenty-two-year-old forward Ferran Jutlga opened the scoring for Barcelona, before Gavi put the Catalans two ahead inside 20 minutes.

Elche came back fighting in the second-half and scored two goals in two minutes to level the scores shortly after the hour mark.

But with just six minutes to go in the contest, Barcelona snatched all three points courtesy of Nico Gonzalez’s strike.

Xavi’s side are now eighth in LaLiga with 27 points and are some 16 adrift of league leaders Real Madrid.

"We've lost [Barcelona's] model of play and we have to bring it back," Xavi said in his post-match press conference.

"I have not been here for six years and there are things that have surprised me tactically. I wasn't here so I don't know who's responsible for it, but it's making [the job] hard for us.

"The large majority [of players] don't understand positional play. There are mechanisms that I understood from the age of 11 and we have players here that haven't worked on them."

The midfielder became the youngster ever player to make his senior debut for Spain when he featured for Luis Enrique’s side in the semi-final of the Nations League against Italy in October.

"It was his first game with Spain, but we already knew all about him," Enrique said speaking after the game.

"It's not normal that he plays like that [at 17]. He's a player with personality, enviable physical conditions and he plays our style of football. He plays like he's at school or in his garden at home.

"It's a pleasure to have a player with that quality and character with us. We can say that he's the national team's present, not [just] the future."
