Barcelona 'assessing Chelsea and Tottenham stars' as part of Philippe Coutinho transfer

Barcelona are reportedly studying Chelsea and Tottenham defenders who could be included in a potential swap deal for Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho could be on his way back to the Premier League this summer, with Barca looking to offload the former Liverpool star.

Chelsea, Spurs and Newcastle are believed to lead the race for the 28-year-old, who has also been linked with Arsenal.

Coutinho spent this season on loan at Bayern Munich, having failed to nail down a regular starting place at Camp Nou following his £142million move from Liverpool in January 2018.

And Barca are turning to Chelsea and Tottenham after Juventus and Inter Milan turned down the chance to sign the Brazil star, according to Sport.

The Spanish publication says the La Liga giants want £80m for the attacking midfielder, and while they would prefer the cash, they will consider a swap deal for a player worth around £25m plus £55m on top.

Newcastle could meet Barca's £80m price tag if a £300m Saudi-backed takeover is successful.

However, there is still considerable uncertainty over whether the Premier League will approve the deal, as football chiefs continue to investigate alleged Saudi involvement in illegal broadcasting of games.

Taking that into account, Sport claims that Barcelona are looking at Chelsea and Tottenham's centre-backs and left-backs in a bid to find a suitable makeweight for a potential Coutinho transfer.

Potential candidates from Chelsea could include centre-halves Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen or Fikayo Tomori, as well as left-backs Emerson and Marcos Alonso.

At Tottenham, centre-half Jan Vertonghen and left-back Ben Davies could be under consideration.

With football club's finances expected to be hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic this summer, Chelsea look set to buck the trend by splashing out.

A £52m deal for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner is in the offing, while the Stamford Bridge side are also expected to launch a bid for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz.

It remains to be seen whether they will also stake £55m plus a player on Coutinho recapturing the thrilling form which made him a Premier League star during his five-year spell at Liverpool.
