Barbers shut down for Covid-19 safety reasons allowed to reopen - but Environmental Health will continue to check up on it

A barbers, which was closed down after staff were caught without visors has been allowed to reopen.

MyBolton and Manchester Evening News witnessed Scott's Barbers, in Horwich, being forced to shut while on patrol with 'Covid cops' on the evening of September 11.

Upon arriving at the shop, Environmental Health officers from Bolton Council were already there to issue an immediate closure order.

It followed repeat complaints about staff not wearing visors, as well as a lack of social distancing.

The business received a final warning instructing it to make improvements, but council officers decided to take action after finding the situation unchanged.

A barber even tried to grab a visor and pull it over his head when he realised what was happening, but it was to no avail.

After a seven-day closure, Scott's Barbers is now back open, although council officers will continue to visit the premises to ensure it remains compliant.

Bolton Council’s executive cabinet member for Environment Regulatory Services, Coun Hilary Fairclough, said: "Safety measures such as social distancing and PPE are not optional extras – they are the law and essential to protect lives and bring the local infection rate down.

“I am pleased to see this business has put the necessary precautions in place, but a week-long closure could have been easily avoided if they had listened to the numerous warnings they were given.

“As ever, we need the public’s help on this. If you see a business flouting the rules, do not give it your custom and report it to the council.”

The notice served on Scott’s Barbers was handed out during a wide-ranging joint operation between the council and Greater Manchester Police.

In the course of just one evening, fixed penalty notices were issued to households hosting large gatherings and several takeaways were fined for operating after 10pm.

People can report concerns about businesses not complying to environmental.health@bolton.gov.uk.
