Barbers and car valet service caught breaching coronavirus rules in Bridgend

Five businesses have been caught breaching coronavirus regulations in Bridgend county borough.

Officers from the Shared Regulatory Service (SRS) gave improvement notices to Tondu Car Valeting Service, Maesteg Road, Bridgend and EPIC Barbers, Well Street, Porthcawl for failing to follow government guidelines on Saturday April 10.

They also gave improvement notices to Blackout Barbers in Caroline Street, Bridgend as well as Istanbul Barber in Wyndham Street, Bridgend, and Lifestyle Express in Tynewydd Row, Ogmore Vale, on Wednesday, April 14.

Documents published on the SRS website revealed officers visited EPIC Barbers on Saturday and found "no visors in use whilst cutting hair". They also revealed a valet service was "in progress" at Tondu Car Valeting Service on the same day and staff were "told not to valet".

Staff at Blackout Barber and Istanbul Barber were "not wearing visors". Lifestyle Express was instructed to "ensure good mask-wearing practices".

The businesses were all given 48 hours to fully comply with the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (Wales) Regulations 2020.

Last week, officers gave improvement notices to a car wash in Maesteg and a hair salon directed by a local councillor.

Staff at barbers and hair salons in Wales must wear a type two mask and a clear visor according to current regulations. The Welsh Government website states these businesses are "amongst the highest of risk settings" if they do not comply with guidelines.

The SRS, a partnership between South Wales Police and Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan councils, carries out checks on licensed premises to ensure they comply with government guidelines. Failure to comply can result in closure, a fixed penalty notice, or being taken to court.

To date 101 premises in Bridgend county borough have been caught breaching coronavirus regulations and given improvement notices, according to the SRS website. Seven local businesses have been temporarily closed.

The service has issued 94 improvement notices to businesses in Cardiff and 74 in the Vale of Glamorgan.
