Barber's outrage as police smash shop window arresting suspect - but refuse to fit bill

A barber is fuming after police smashed his shop window while arresting a suspect - but refused to pay for the damage.

Evan Babaker turned up for work to find a huge crack in the front window of his shop and a note left by police officers on the floor saying they had smashed it.

The Metropolitan Police told him it was "not their problem" his window was smashed while officers were "only doing their job".

Evan is fuming that police in Wimbledon, south west London, are refusing to fix the pane, which would cost hundreds of pounds to replace.

He said: "I have become the victim in all this and the damages have to be sorted out by myself.

"What I find interesting is what if I did not have insurance? What if the whole window was smashed?

"Would the police have stayed outside my shop from 3am to 9am I got in, or would they just have left a note again to tell me the shop window is fully smashed?"

In one of the emails sent to Mr Babaker, Britain's biggest police force said they sympathised with the situation, but would be unable to assist.

The message read: "As we understand it, some unavoidable damage occurred to the window of your property during the arrests of a non-compliant suspect by police.

"It would therefore be totally inappropriate for this office to reimburse you for the costs incurred when police were merely carrying out the role the public rightly expects of them."

A Met spokesman said officers were called to Wimbledon Broadway at 3am.

She said: "Officers attended and arrested two men on suspicion of affray.

"Both were taken into custody and later released under investigation.

"During the arrest, a glass window of a nearby commercial property was smashed.

"Details on who to contact were left for the owner as is standard."
