Barbecues in Glasgow parks: is it legal to fire up the BBQ as city basks in heatwave

Our city is set to be hotter than Lisbon this week, with some Glaswegians already nursing some pretty painful sunburn after a welcome sunny weekend.

Following a fairly bleak and miserable May, we're in the middle of a heatwave as we approach June, with temperatures set to top 24C tomorrow (Tuesday) and the bright sunshine and blue skies to last throughout the week.

And with Glasgow residents currently locked in the city amid Level 3 coronavirus restrictions, sadly, we can't get to the beach. The usual flock of Glaswegians heading to Ayr or Troon to bask in the sunshine and perhaps take a dip in the freezing Firth of Clyde have had to hit pause, for now.

However, here in Glasgow we're lucky to have several gorgeous parks in the city, with Kelvingrove, Glasgow Green and Pollok Park - to name but a few and you can guarantee when temperatures reach more than 20 degrees, the disposable BBQs will be lit up in green spaces across the city.

But are you legally allowed to fire up a BBQ in a Glasgow park?

We have good news - the answer is YES! However, it does come with some caveats...

When asked the question, a Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “Barbecues are allowed provided due care and attention is paid to the risk of fire and of scorch damage to parks furniture and grass.

"If a disposable barbeque is lit and then placed directly on to grass or park furniture it will cause damage.

"All litter and debris must be disposed of in the appropriate manner."

Of course, there are restrictions on the number of people who can gather amid Level 3 lockdown restrictions.

Under these rules, you can meet in groups of up to six from six households outdoors, in a private garden or a public place like a park or an outdoor area of a café. Meanwhile, under 12s do not count towards the total number of people or households meeting outside.

Bear in mind there will be extra police patrols at the likes of Kelvingrove Park this summer.

Officers will be stationed at the entrances to Kelvingrove on select days when high visitor numbers are anticipated – meaning sunseekers caught with alcohol will be asked to dispose of it outside or face being turned away.

Measures to manage access to the park were introduced last year following a series of incidents that saw mass gatherings despite covid restrictions as well as public drinking, public urination, significant littering and disorder and assaults on police officers, while we've also reported on disturbances at the park earlier this year, during the covid-19 lockdown.

Furthermore, last week we reported on Kelvingrove Bandstand having been vandalised by a group of youngsters who had gathered in the park.

However, fellow Glaswegians, you have the green light to head to one of our city's fine parks and get that barbecue started! Enjoy!
