Barbara Windsor is to receive a Damehood in the New Years Honours list, according to reports.
The 78-year-old actress, who was made an MBE in 2000, is best known for her work in the Carry On films during the 1960s and 1970s and for playing Peggy Mitchell in Eastenders.
Windsor is thought to be among the names receiving the royal honours which will be announced ahead of the new year, she will be awarded the title for her charity work according to The Sun.
Windsor is an ambassador for Age UK and other charities which support the elderly as well as being a campaigner for the Royal British Legion and annual poppy appeal.
A Buckingham Palace source told The Sun: “The Queen was delighted when Barbara’s name was put forward. Like Her Majesty, she is someone who has been part of the fabric of the way of life in Britain for many years.”
Lynton Crobsy, the strategist who oversaw the Conservative party’s election victory this year is also set to be knighted, according to reports, reigniting the row about cronyism in the honours system.
