Barbara Windsor's Alzheimer's is too far gone to be at Marathon finish line, says husband

Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott Mitchell and some of her close EastEnders co-star plan are taking on the London Marathon this weekend.

The group, calling themselves Barbara’s Revolutionaries, are running to raise awareness for Dementia Revelation, a charity launched by Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer's Research UK who have teamed up to raise money and awareness for new research.

Scott confirmed last year that he would be running the marathon for the charity, after wife Barbara confirmed in 2018 that she had Alzheimer's disease.

The former EastEnders actress, who played Peggy Mitchell on the BBC soap, had been diagnosed in 2014.

EastEnders' star Natalie Cassidy's heartbreaking wish for Barbara Windsor

Just weeks ago, Scott revealed on Loose Women that he hoped she would be able to attend the event and greet him at the finish line.

But after recently opening up on her deteriorating health, Scott has now revealed on Good Morning Britain she will not be cheering him on from the streets, but instead from her home.

Appearing alongside Barbara's pal and co-star Tanya Franks, he explained that after much discussion, and as to avoid it being “overwhelming” for Barbara, she will cheer him on watching the telly instead.

Scott said: “At the beginning I was really hoping that, but after having a couple of meetings with various people, the logistics of it, I’ve had a really serious think and I think it’s best that she’s not there.

“I think it would get very overwhelming for her, everyone would want to give her a hug. I won’t be there for her if there’s one of those confused moments.

"I just think it would be better for her own wellbeing if she’s at home.”

Speaking of the confusion she suffers regularly, Scott added: “There are horrible moments of confusion which can be quite constant and heartbreaking to watch.

“One thing I’ve noticed is evening is always worse for us, it gets much worse.”

Scott went on to reveal that Barbara does still recognise him, and in those confused moments she will “look at me and say as long as I can see you I know something’s okay” even if she doesn’t recognise her surroundings.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
