Barbara Windsor is 'sometimes far away' as she battles Alzheimer's disease

Barbara Windsor has experienced moments where 'she is far away' while battling Alzheimer's disease.

The Carry On queen, 82, has had a tough few months but her spirit is still there, her pal Larry Lamb has revealed.

The legendary actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2014 however her condition has progressively worsened.

Speaking to OK! magazine, Barbara's on-screen EastEnders husband shed light on the update that he had received from her partner, Scott Mitchell.

"I met her husband Scott a few months ago at a do and he said she is alright and a lot of the time she is chatty, but she has moments where she is far away," Larry told the publication.

"Her spirit is still there though, dear old Babs."

Larry added: "She is certainly very loved and it was one of the big moments of my career getting to play opposite her."

Barbara is currently being cared for by her husband Scott, however the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has proven difficult for the star.

At the start of this month, Barbara's pal Christopher Biggins admitted that the Peggy Mitchell actress was confused as to why people couldn't visit her.

Speaking to The Sun, Biggins said: "She’s used to having a lot of visitors but now she’s asking why people have stopped coming to see her.

"It’s not because she thinks 'they don’t like me' because her husband Scott explains to her but she just forgets the explanation and she asks all the time."

Although Barbara has struggled to come to terms with the pandemic, her loved ones have maintained that the telly star still maintains her humour despite the disease appearing to increasingly take hold.
