Barbara Bonansea willed Italy to a comeback win over Australia

Barbara Bonansea helped Italy stun Australia on Sunday morning in Group C of the Women’s World Cup. The Italian forward managed a goal in the second half and in stoppage time during her team’s 2-1 upset of Australia.

In the 56th minute, Bonansea stole the ball away from a careless Australian defender, and drove to the net while beating another defender and the goalie for a beautiful finish on the far post. But she wasn’t done. When Italian midfielder Valentina Cernoia crossed the ball into the box in the 95th minute, Bonansea headed the ball past the goalie for her second score of the game.

Here’s a look at the two strikes.

Italy hadn’t been to the Women’s World Cup in 20 years, so it was expected to fall to third in the group behind Australia and Brazil. However, Bonansea’s performance may realign the expectations for how far this Italian group can go in the tournament.
