Former family lawyer and Queen's Birthday honour recipient Barbara Baker has been sworn in as Tasmania's 29th governor.

Ms Baker, who was recently appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for her service in law and the administration of justice, assumed office at a ceremony on Wednesday.

She shared a coronavirus-safe elbow bump with Premier Peter Gutwein at the conclusion of proceedings at Government House, which were also attended by new Labor opposition leader David O'Byrne.

Ms Baker takes over from Dr Kate Warner, who held the role for more than five years.

She was recognised earlier this week for her work in the area of family law, professional legal organisations, and as a mentor and role model for young women.

Ms Baker, 63, was named Tasmania's next governor in May, saying she hopes to raise awareness about family violence.

"Having regard to my work as a judge, the majority of my parenting cases involved family violence," she said.

"It is very important to raise awareness, so that victims of family violence can understand and identify what family violence is and so that the community can call out perpetrators."

Ms Baker became the first female partner of law firm Murdoch Clarke in 1993 and served as a Federal Circuit Court judge from 2008 to 2021.
