Bar fined for Covid rules breach hits back and uses penalty notice as loo roll

A bar which was slapped with a fine for serving drinkers who hadn't been vaccinated has launched a tirade on social media against the penalty.

And the bar in Queensland, Australia, accompanied the rebuke with a very unsubtle image of their penalty notice, for $6,892 (£3,709), being used as toilet paper.

Bar Wunder in Toowoomba had allowed unvaccinated people into the venue in breach of state-wide restrictions in place to tackle the spread of Covid.

In Queensland a mandate says that people over 16 can be asked for proof of their vaccine status and must check-in to venues for the purpose of contact-tracing.

But after the bar broke this rule and was hit with a hefty fine owners took to social media to hit out.

The bar said on Facebook : "It's no secret that we are completely opposed to segregation and will continue to be. Forever.

"So last night we were issued with a lovely fine of $6,892 (£3,709) because we accept everyone equally. This is not a woe is me post.

"We knew exactly what we were up against and still stand by our decisions, with zero regrets."

Owners went on to rail that they 'don't believe this is a public health issue' and called the rules "nonsensical".

They ended the post with a quote from African-American civil rights activist Rosa Parks saying: "You must never be fearful of what you are doing when it is right."

It comes after Australia reported record high new Covid cases on Saturday for a third day.

New South Wales state reported 2,482 new cases, Victoria state reported 1,504 new cases and Queensland state reported 31 new cases on Saturday, together topping Australia's previous high of 3,820 cases a day earlier.

The country shut its borders soon after the pandemic first hit, which kept cases down relative to other nations.

It has so far recorded about 239,000 cases and about 2,130 deaths.
