PACING around outside his unit at Bar Beach on an evening in December last year, John Peter Collins gave an insight into his state of mind and the violence and chaotic scenes that were about to unfold.
He ranted about paedophiles, said he was "the ultimate fighter" and the son of Mexican drug lord "El Chapo", boasted about his manhood and threatened to kill and rape his neighbours.
It was utterly unhinged and completely terrifying.
When his neighbours asked Collins what was wrong or told him to "pull his head in", Collins, 45, became even more irate, threatening anyone and everyone in earshot and jumped the fence into the private courtyard of a neighbouring unit.
There he walked into the unit and assaulted a man and threatened his wife.
He then kicked in the door to another unit, screaming at the terrified woman inside to "get the f--- out".
When the first police arrived and confronted him inside the unit, Collins told them: "I'm the ultimate fighter and I'm going to kill you c---." He wrestled with the police, punching one officer in the head and kicking him in the ribs. When the other police officer hit him with a taser, Collins yelled: "that doesn't even f---ing hurt you c---." The police officer twice tried to "drive stun" Collins, where the taser is held against the target without firing the projectiles, but it seemed to have little effect and on the second attempt Collins kicked the police officer, causing him to fall back and smash a coffee table.
Collins then fled back into his unit and the two police officers positioned themselves outside the fence as back-up was called.
During the tense standoff that followed, Collins armed himself with a wooden baseball bat, which he smashed on the door frame and held above his head, striking a pose. He also paced in an out of the unit and threw a water bottle and a mobile phone at police.
"I'm going to kill all of you cop c---s," he said. "The bikies are coming and you are all going to die. "My dad is El Chapo. "I am number two, El Chapo is number one."
Then, after about 10 minutes, he suddenly charged out of the door at police armed with the bat and was about a metre from a police officer when he was hit with a taser, causing him to stiffen and fall back onto the ground.
But it wasn't over; as police swarmed into the front yard Collins attempted to get to his feet and was tasered again. He kicked out at police and it took six officers to restrain him.
Collins, who remains on bail, appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to seven offences, including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and aggravated break and enter.
