Baptise series two: Is this the final season of the BBC One detective drama?

Baptiste is back for a brand new series.

Tcheky Karyo will reprise his role as private detective Julien Baptiste and this time the BBC One drama is heading to Hungary.

Joining Tcheky Karyo is a star-studded cast including Fiona Shaw who is known for her roles in Killing Eve and Fleabag.

Fiona plays British ambassador Emma Chambers whose whole family disappears in the Hungarian mountains.

The second series of Baptiste is more about Julien's relationship with his family following an horrific personal tragedy.

Speaking about what viewers can expect Karyo said: "Series two is about the relationship Julien has with his wife, then the case of Emma Chambers' missing family and the relationship he develops with Emma and how they get to know each other through this experience.

"It is also about society and how we explore different cultures and idealisms."

And speaking about how he has changed from the Baptise in season one he added: "Julien has reached the bottom of himself. He's filled with anger, bitterness, pain, and he no longer knows where's north or south.

"Julien's lost. He gets aggressive, he loses his temper, and brings a lot of pain to his loved ones at home. That is how we discover him at the beginning of the series. Then we flip from different time periods to understand where he is coming from and eventually see how great his capacity for resilience is."

Sadly writers Jack and Harry Williams have confirmed the second series is the final one.

Speaking to the Metro Jack said: "When we finished Baptiste series one we had an idea for a trilogy and it was all great and very exciting. And then we thought about it and what we didn’t ever want to do was somehow see him become another police officer."

He added: "I think we began to worry that it would become a formula. Do we suddenly make him just another cop?

"When we wrote it we started to realise that if we did this we wouldn't get to do another one.

"It's about doing the right thing for the character and not going: 'Hey, we'll be back next year with more crazy adventures.' It's something great that we all love and we're proud of."

Baptise series two starts on Sunday, July 18, at 9pm on BBC One.
