Banwell fire: residents evacuated as eight fire crews tackle huge blaze near M5

Residents of a street in Banwell have evacuated their homes as eight fire crews work to put out a huge blaze in the area.

A cordon is currently in place on Whitley Road, Banwell as black smoke continues to billow from an industrial building after it set on fire.

The cause of both the fire and the evacuation is not yet clear but Avon Fire and Rescue will soon be issuing an update.

A ‘huge plume of black smoke’ could be seen from the M5 near Weston-super-Mare earlier as passengers stuck in traffic on the busy motorway captured the scene.

One motorist said: "There was a huge plume of black smoke billowing into the air, blowing over the M5. Looked like it might have come from a farm. It was high enough to not affect traffic but there was a fair bit of rubbernecking."

BristolLive understands there is still smoke coming from the building as of 7pm, and fire crews as well as police are still in attendance.
