Banners tell people to stay home in Japan

At the Sugamo Station Shopping Street in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, 50 colorful banners with the words "Stay Home Ouchi de Sugosou (Let's stay home)" have appeared in the wake of the spread of the new coronavirus, as a call to people walking through the street that they should go out less.

The shopping district promotion association put up the banners on May 2. Since May 5 was "Children's Day," the association used five colors -- blue, white, purple, yellow and red -- to match the color of the tubular streamer that accompanies the koinobori carp streamers that are flown for this holiday, and used hiragana, making the banners easy for children to read.

The association will continue using the banners until the end of this month, alongside the extension of the state of emergency.

"We hope people will go out less after seeing the banners," said Masafumi Nagashima, head of the association.
