Bannerman High coronavirus cases: cluster in north east Glasgow grows as pupil tests positive after attending classes

A pupil at Bannerman High School in Glasgow has tested positive for coronavirus after attending classes last week.

NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde confirmed late last night that their test and protect service had identified a further positive case of Covid-19 in the north east of the city, connected to the school.

Whilst there is no indication this further infection occurred in the school, the pupil, who they say "is not causing clinical concern" did attend classes last week.

The school in Baillieston has been linked to the latest Covid-19 cluster, with three new positive cases on Thursday of last week having brought the total associated with the cluster to 11 - at the time NHSGCC said that their was no indication any transmission had occurred in the school itself following the confirmation of the three new cases, with none of the affected pupils having attended.

In respect of the further new case, a Problem Assessment Group (PAG) met last night and systematically established a list of contacts this pupil had including while in school.

Test and protect staff have started to contact those identified as well as the parents of any of contacts who are pupils. The contacts are all being advised to self-isolate and being given appropriate advice.

To respect and maintain patient confidentiality no further details will be released by NHSGCC.

NHSGGC’s Dr Daniel Carter, who led the PAG said:  “We would like to reiterate to local people and businesses that this cluster of cases of Covid-19 is being thoroughly investigated and managed by the NHSGGC Public Health Protection Team.

“To control the spread of the virus it is essential that any one contacted by test and protect follows the directions given by our contact tracing team, including self-isolation.  Anyone who may have been exposed to this case is being given appropriate advice.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of continuing with the general measures to minimise the risk of Covid-19 to themselves and to others. These include social distancing, regular handwashing, and being vigilant for symptoms. Anyone with symptoms should immediately self-isolate and seek a test.”

The news comes after a school pupil at Caldervale High School in Airdrie became the eighth person linked to a cluster in North Lanarkshire to test positive for the virus.

The pupil attended school on Thursday, August 13, only and is now self-isolating at home alone with immediate family.
