A banned driver who sped off as a police officer leaned into his car, has been jailed for 31 months.
Brian Webber, 53, of Dumfries, was confronted by PC Martin Tennick in Glasgow’s Tradeston area last November but drove away.
Webber was arrested three weeks later while under the influence of alcohol during a test drive of a car.
The dad of three pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to culpable and reckless driving and drink driving.
Webber also admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance on two separate occasions.
The court heard he was banned from driving for life in 2006 after several previous convictions.
Police officers approached Webber, who was behind the wheel of a Mercedes. in the city’s Springfield Quay.
PC Tennick, 36, went to speak to him but the driver’s door was locked and instead he opened the rear door.
Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “He was leaning in and telling the driver to stop.
“Webber then put the vehicle in reverse, accelerated and reversed a short distance.
“The constable was forced to move with the vehicle as it came backwards.”
Webber fled the scene and officers discovered he had a “long term disqualification”.
Just over three weeks later, Webber was then stopped by police carrying out vehicle checks in the city’s Townhead area.
Webber - who latterly worked as a kitchen porter at a hotel in the Outer Hebrides - was test driving a Mazda with his step-daughter.
Officers smelled alcohol coming from Webber and he was then found to be twice the legal limit.
His ban was soon discovered as well as his part in the previous incident.
Clare Ryan, defending, told the court: “He was disqualified and there is no excuse for him driving.”
Sheriff Joseph Platt said prison was the only option.
