Banned driver who sped off from Morrisons car park is jailed

A banned driver who sped off from police has been jailed.

Lloyd Withers failed to stop when officers tried to prevent him leaving the Fishponds Morrisons supermarket car park.

Bristol Crown Court heard there followed an eight-minute pursuit in which Wither drove dangerously before he smashed into bollards and was arrested.

The 45-year-old, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving while disqualified and uninsured on December 18 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to four shoplifting offences in November and December last year.

The court heard he committed the offences in breach of a suspended sentence.

Judge Martin Picton jailed him for 16 months plus 20 weeks activation of the previously suspended term.

He told Withers: "You have a depressing record for offending of this nature.

"The driving was a very bad example of its kind, aggravated by previous offences.

"You have put yourself in breach of a suspended sentence."

The judge banned Withers from driving for three years and eight months.

He will have to pass an extended driving test before being able to drive again.

Ehsanul Oarith, prosecuting via video link, said police spotted a Volkswagen which looked in disrepair, being driven by Withers, and discovered it was insured to a woman.

When they tried to stop him leaving Morrisons car park he exited, the court heard.

Over the course of the next eight minutes he drove on the wrong side of the road, mounted the pavement and narrowly avoided pedestrians.

Mr Oarith said Withers contravened no entry signs before smashing into bollards and running off.

Police deployed a Taser device which put him to the ground, but he continued to flee before being arrested in a garden.

The court heard he admitted four offences of stealing from shops which included Tesco Express in Knowle and the Coop in Henleaze.

"He wants to try to conquer drug addiction."
