Banned driver stopped by police had 51 points on licence

A driver who had 51 points on his licence has been pulled over by police officers in Peterborough.

The man had already been disqualified from driving when he was caught behind the wheel on Friday.

“He has 51 points on his licence. Yes, that is fifty one,” BCH road policing, a unit made up of officers from across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, said on Twitter.

The man has been reported and his vehicle has been seized.

Drivers can be banned from the roads after accumulating 12 points on a licence.

But investigations have found that around 10,000 people continue to drive despite crossing the 12 point threshold.

Points can be issued for offences such as drink-driving, speeding, and failing to produce a specimen.

It is unclear what offences the Peterborough driver had committed.

“He’s clearly a prolific road traffic offender and has amassed a significant number of points in a relatively short period of time,” a police spokesperson told the BBC.

“He was recognised by one of the officers who had given him points previously and knew he was disqualified.

“If he continues to commit offences to we will continue to put him in front of the courts and allow them to hand over whatever sentence they deem appropriate.”
