Banned driver in borrowed car refused to stop for police then rammed them

When police asked banned driver Kye Collins to stop the answer was a resounding no.

Instead of pulling over he led them on a lunchtime car chase around St Paul's during which he rammed their car.

Father-of-three Collins admitted he drove off in panic in his friend's Citreon C3.

The 31-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified on July 3.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC jailed him for 15 months.

He told Collins: "You drove really in the most appalling fashion in that lunch hour on that summer day."

Collins was banned from driving for three-and-a-half years and told to pay a £149 victim surcharge.

Ellen McAnaw, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court police drove alongside Collins and asked: "Can you stop a second please, pull over."

The judge was shown body worn camera footage showing how Collins ignored the police and sped off at 50mph into St Pauls.

After driving on the wrong side of the road and speeding through red traffic lights he stopped and slowly reversed into the tailing police vehicle.

He the continued towards Bristol Royal Infimary and managed to evade arrest - being picked up some 20 days later.

Farah Rashid, defending, said: "He panicked. He knew he was disqualified and he tried to get away from the police.

"He knows it was wrong.

"He has remorse.

"He clearly knows what is going to happen to him."

The court heard Collins had taken drugs in the past but was not under the influence when driving that day.
