Banned driver filled up with fuel and drove off without paying - in front of police officers

A banned driver filled up with petrol and drove off without paying.

Victor Staples, who lives off Rickett Lane, Blidworth, pulled onto the forecourt of a petrol station in Rainworth.

Police officers were there to take a witness statement from someone else, Nottingham Crown Court heard, when 60-year-old Staples arrived and helped himself to fuel.

His disappearance from the pumps led to his arrest.

Staples was sentenced for driving whilst disqualified, making off without payment and having no insurance.

He had twice been disqualified from driving in the past.

Roxanne Aisthorpe, prosecuting, said: "He has repeatedly flouted the disqualification and continued to drive".

She explained how he drove to the location earlier and drove back to the petrol station for a second time during that day.

"He was in his vehicle when arrested. The vehicle is registered to him. Clearly it was a vehicle he purchased to use and he was seen driving it on numerous occasions that day".

Raglan Ashton, mitigating, said Staples had been in custody since April 8. He received an eight-week sentence on May 30.

"Essentially he has served four-and-half months, the equivalent of a nine-month sentence.

"He has mobility issues and uses his car".

Judge John Burgess, who sentenced him, said: "If he goes on driving his car when disqualified, he will end up in prison".

Staples had faced a robbery allegation but the prosecution offered no evidence on Monday, September 18. No further details were given in court about that charge.

He pleaded guilty to the making off without payment, disqualified driving and having no third party insurance.

Judge Burgess said: "The prosecution is not proceeding with the robbery charge. I have to deal with you for making off with petrol without paying for it and driving whilst disqualified. You have been disqualified more than once".

Because Staples is a repeat offender, he gave him 16 weeks in prison for making off without payment and four weeks consecutively for driving whilst disqualified.

Six penalty points will be added to his licence for having no insurance.
