Banned danger-driver fraudulently insured car to undertake delivery work to pay off cocaine debt

A banned dangerous driver fraudulently insured a car in order to undertake delivery work so he could pay off a cocaine debt.

Aaron Warrener was disqualified from driving when he resorted to insuring a car in his brother's name and then put his ex-girlfriend's name down as a named driver so he could begin work as a delivery driver.

The 24-year-old needed the job to pay of "significant drug debts", but when police attempted to pull him over on June 20, 2020, Warrener took off at speed, leading police on a lengthy chase that ended in a crash.

Warrener appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Friday to be sentenced for dangerous driving and fraud by false representation.

The court heard Warrener had been banned from driving in February 2020, but months later, on June 4, while "pretending to be his brother" he took out car insurance with his ex-girlfriend as the named driver.

Warrener's brother and his ex had no idea what he'd done.

Then, on June 20, Warrener was driving in Sunderland when police attempted to pull him over.

But rather than stop, he "accelerated aggressively" and hit speeds of around 70mph in a 30mph zone.

A chase then ensued, with Warrener overtaking and undertaking other motorists.

At one point he dangerously slammed on his brakes on Sea View Road before taking off again.

The court heard that the chase ended when Warrener smashed into a VW, causing the cars to "spin in the road".

The two VW occupants also sustained whiplash in the crash before Warrener then fled on foot.

He was soon detained, and he admitted that he was banned from driving after being convicted of aggravated vehicle taking.

Annalisa Moscardini, defending, said Warrener, of Hendon Close, Sunderland, knows his "actions were very stupid" and that he "panicked" when he saw police.

She said at the time he was working as a delivery driver and was trying to pay off a "significant" cocaine debt.

Ms Moscardini said that through help from his family, Warrener has managed to "end his habit" and also pay off the debts.

"He's a completely different person to what he was in June 2020, he is more mature", she added.

Sentencing him, Recorder Amy Mannion said "little or nothing will stop you from driving".

Warrener was jailed for 14 months and banned from driving for two years and seven months.
